Personal growth and healing require a non-judgmental atmosphere of both accepting people where they are and guiding them towards where they want to be.
ABOUT ME
Hi, my name is Shana Rivera. I am a compassionate and experienced licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) and certified dialectical behavior therapist (C-DBT) with 15+ years of experience, dedicated to supporting adults in their journey towards improved wellbeing. My passion for helping others comes from a deep understanding of the challenges individuals face in when navigating their mental health. I understand how difficult the search for a therapist can be. Questioning whether a therapist will “get you” can create doubt and stall the search process. I use a warm, non-judgmental approach to create a safe and trusting therapeutic space where you can explore your thoughts, feelings and experiences.
Specializations
Emotion dysregulation
I am certified in dialectical behavior therapy which is an evidence-based practice specifically designed to help individuals who struggle with intense and difficult to manage emotions. Interventions used in DBT include mindfulness to observe and accept uncomfortable emotion, emotion regulation techniques to change the frequency, intensity, and duration of emotions, distress tolerance techniques to avoid making situations worse, and interpersonal effectiveness to feel confident and self-respecting in relationships.
Trauma
I have extensive experience working with individuals who have survived emotional, physical, sexual, and other acute traumas. Trauma can have a lasting impact on a person’s mental and physical health and may lead to symptoms such as anxiety, depression, flashbacks, nightmares, hypervigilance, and dissociation. I provide both a safe and supportive environment to process difficult emotions and the tools to better manage these emotional responses as well as facilitate integration of traumatic experiences so that people can regain a sense of freedom and self agency.
Anxiety and Depression
The past several years have created a pattern of concern, fear, and isolation for many. Anxiety and depression sometimes go undiagnosed and can manifest in physical ailments, problems in forming and maintaining relationships, occupational issues, and even hopelessness and suicidal ideation. I want to create a safe non-judgmental space for individuals to share their struggles while providing them with real life tools to improve their quality of life.
